CHAPTER 39

Catching Angels

With the last scraps of food removed from the table, our meal came to an end. Abba concluded the repast with the Birkat hamazon—the after-meal blessing.

One by one, we filed into the Atrium. Yeshua was anxious to return to his father’s bedside, but first I wanted a few moments alone with him. I grabbed his arm and pulled him into the dark alcove in the Main Hallway—just around the corner from where Doda Mary, Martha, and Sali were milling about, discussing plans for the remainder of their evening.

“Miri, what are we doing here?” Yeshua asked as I forcibly steered him around the corner of the doorway and backed him into the tight space.

“Shh, Yeshua,” I whispered as I poked my head around the doorway to make sure no one missed us. “We must be cautious!”

Yeshua was amused by my secretive antics, and he barely held his laughter in as he watched me nervously poking my head in and out of the alcove.

“Miri, we just spent the better part of the day alone together. Why do you think anyone would mind if we went off on our own again?”

Quick, Yeshua! Time is of the essence!

Before anyone could intrude on us, I pulled myself up on my tiptoes and flattened myself against his abdomen as I threw my arms around his neck and pulled his face down to my level. His heavy brows popped up in surprise as I planted my lips firmly on his.

“Mmmph!”

At first, Yeshua seemed surprised as I worked my tongue between his lips, but once he relaxed and closed his eyes, I felt his arms slowly circle my waist. Ever so gently, he lifted me off my feet and into his embrace, and when he kissed me back, I felt as though we were floating on air—dancing under an evening sky where twinkling stars played Hide-and-Seek behind clusters of puffy lavender-blue clouds.

Oh, my head was swimming! And in that glorious moment, I wanted so much to tell Yeshua how much he meant to me! But there was absolutely no way I was going to pry my lips away from his—not when I had another form of communication better suited to my purposes. In my mind, I already knew what I yearned to tell him and I sent those words into flight …

Ani ohevet otcha, Yeshua!

I love you, Yeshua!

Ani ohevet otach, Miriamne!

I gasped as his response resonated through my mind like a beautiful song …

I love you, Miriamne!

A gentle roll of laughter echoed in my head, and I held him all the more tightly—promising myself to never, ever let him go. I kissed him harder, and when he tightened his hold on me—

“What in HaShem’s name is going on here?!”

Our lips were still fused together when Yeshua’s eyes suddenly went wide. When his gaze focused on a point high above my head, I did not need to turn around to see who was disturbing us.

“Yeshua … Miriamne … just what are the two of you up to?”
